Flooded

Before leaving for Guatemala, my sister in law Glenda, who is from Guatemala, told me that I would be arriving during the rainy season. She said though that it doesn't rain in Guatemala like it does in the States. It only rains in spurts for a little bit each day. Well, I think Global Warming has drastically changed the weather patterns since she was last there. The rain and storm has not stopped for the last 48 hours straight. Yesterday, I walked the usual 20 minutes to my bus stop. However, I had to brave the rain and so I didn't bother wearing my trail running shoes and socks and instead just wore my water shoes knowing that I would get drenched anyway. I had to not only brave the rain, but I also had to wade through small rivers in the streets while avoiding all the trash and small dead animals that floated down. The cars enjoyed splashing me as they drove by and I kept thinking that I'm only going through this much pain because the children need their medicine today. Well, after getting on the bus, I found out that the schools are closed because of the flooding and that I should just go home. I turned around and swam my way back home. For the afternoon, I changed to shorts since I knew my legs were going to get drenched anyway. I'm pretty sure small villages have floated away since yesterday.

Today, I got the call that the schools are still closed and so instead, I will study for my Spanish exam.
